Q: Why shouldn't Retrovir and stavudine (d4T, Zerit) not be taken together in an HIV regimen of medicine?

A: Retrovir therapy can cause viral mutations that prevent the drug from working as it should. These mutations can also prevent Zerit from working. And the two drugs are antagonistic to one another and can cause very unpleasant, additional adverse reactions.
