Q: How can I buy Aricept without prescription?
Can you please help me to buy Aricept without prescription. I work and live in the UK but my father who lives in Africa has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I have been trying to get him Aricept to help him with his condition but as I don’t have prescription I am unable to buy it. I have spoken to my GP but he said without seeing the patient he can issue me with prescription therefore can you please help how can I get it either in the UK or elsewhere. I looked at different web sites but don't how to check they are real ones or not.

A: It is illegal to buy prescription drugs without a prescription. However, if your father has been formally diagnosed by a doctor, perhaps that doctor can talk to your doctor and get you a UK prescription which you can then send to your dad. Internet sites charge a lot more because as part of the payment, you are paying to be "prescribed" your order by a doctor the web company keeps on staff. The drugs may or may not be the real thing. Another thing you can do is write to the manufacturer. Some of them offer free drugs to those who cannot pay. Perhaps your situation would be similar.

Q: How effective is the new medication for Alzeimer disease Aricept?
Alzeimer patient was prescribed a new medication =Aricept and I wondered whether it is an effective drug or the number of side effects.

A: New? Aricept was approved for treatment of Alzheimer's Disease in 1996. My mother took it from about 1999 until her death in 2001. There was no benefit as far as I can tell. Maybe it helps some other people, but I don't think it helped my mother. I doubt if she really had Alzheimers's Disease though. I think she had Vascular Dementia.

Q: Does anyone know if Aricept causes nightmares in elderly patients?
My aunt is 94 and recently started taking Aricept. She is experiencing vivid nightmares and having trouble distinguishing between reality and the nightmare--any one have any idea if the med could cause this?

A: Yes it does most doc's recommend taking it in the am. My grandma had the same issue! Please have them take it in the am!

Q: Does anyone have experience with bad side-effects of Aricept?
My mother was given Aricept in a nursing home without our family being notifiedof this. She has been in a very fast decline for several weeks, probably the amount of time she was given Aricept. We have seen her memory, language, and ability to walk and feed herself decline severely. We believe it has been caused by Aricept. We are praying that she will regain what skills she had once this drug is out of her system.

A: inform the doctor & give him a copy of your power of attorney paperwork.

Q: Is Aricept used for prevention of alzheimers as well as treatment?
Can Aricept be used as a preventative measure against Alzheimers or is it only used for treatment of an existing case.

A: Aricept is brand name for the drug donepezil. Currently, there is no definitive proof that use of donepezil or other similar agents alters the course or progression of Alzheimer's disease. However, 6-12 month controlled studies have shown modest benefits in cognition and/or behavior, such as one published in 1999. Pilot studies have reported that donepezil therapy may potentially have effects on markers of disease progression, such as hippocampal volume. Therefore, many neurologists, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians use donepezil in patients with Alzheimer's disease. In 2005, the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) withdrew its recommendation for use of the drug for mild-to-moderate AD, on the basis that there is no significant improvement in functional outcome; of quality of life or of behavioral symptoms. However, NICE revised its guidelines to suggest that donepezil be used in moderate stage patients for whom the evidence is strongest. While the drug is currently indicated for mild to moderate Alzheimer's, there is also evidence from 2 trials that it may be effective for moderate to severe disease. An example of this is a Karolinska Institute paper published in The Lancet in early 2006, which states that donepezil improves cognitive function even in patients with severe Alzheimer's disease symptoms.

Q: Can Aricept help memory loss side effects of medications?
At least 3 of medications (that I definitely need) cause memory loss, memory problems, and/or concentration problems. Does anyone know if I could possibly take Aricept (the medication used for alzheimer's) to help these incredibly difficult memory/concentration problems that interfere tremendously with my functioning and cause a lot of anxiety worrying if I'm going to forget something. I use a ton of visual aid reminders to help with this problem, but I still forget a lot and worry about forgetting things. I have a lot of education, but I've always had a problem with reading comprehension. I have to read things over and over. It also doesn't help that I have a lot of disturbing things on my mind that interfere with memory and concentration, but I've had this memory problem for years. Thanks, in advance, for responding to my question.

A: Accept is prescribed in situations where Alzheimer's is suspected. ADDING it to to meds. you take that may be contributing to memory loss would probably not be helpful. It would only add more to the chemical "cocktail" already existing in your brain.Of course, your need for these drugs must be part of the equation. However, the only one who can decide this for you is your physician. I am not qualified to give medical advice, and am only going by my own experience. Please ask your Dr (and pharmacist if you like) about this, and take the names and the dosages of ALL the drugs you take with you to your Dr. Don't forget that many over the counter drugs,as well as caffeine ( a drug) and alcohol of course have side effects. Some OTC drugs causing memory loss may include NyQuil, Benadryl, Sominex, etc. Good luck.

Q: Is increased anger a side effect of Aricept?
My father is 83 and suffering with mild dementia. The doctor prescribed 5 mg of Aricept daily. He has been on it about a month and I am seeing more anxiety and anger than he has ever had. Could this be a side effect of the Aricept?

A: I don't believe Aricept is the culprit. My grandmother was diagnosed with dimentia/alzheimers. It's my understanding that sometimes dimentia can cause the individual to react in ways that are completely against thier nature. Ex: before the disease they are always calm and accomodating then become irritable and irrational. This just could be the disease itself progressing. Please get in touch with support groups, your doctor can give you advice on where to find them. They do help, quite a bit and get as much information as available to you. Also, talk to your doctor about the differences you are seeing in your father. Talk openly with him, this will give him a better perspective on how the disease is progressing and how to treat it. Good luck and God Bless.

Q: How long is Aricept effective for the Alzheimers victum?
My mother has been reciving this medication for the past 5 years. I'm just wondering for how long this treatment will work for her.

A: There's no way to assume how long medications will work for our patients. The important thing to look for is relapse of any acute changes that have improved with this medication. People have taken medications for years with no return of the symptoms that initially introduced them to the medication. You should alert her doctor immediately with a list of these changes and their severity. God bless!

Q: How long would a person have to take aricept before a dfference would be noticed?
This is an elderly stroke patient w/ dementia and severe short term memory loss.

A: It depends on the person.................... and there over all health.................. ..could be as soon as 3 days or as long as 1 month........good luck

Q: How effective is the drug Aricept?
Aricept is prescribed to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. What are the pros and cons, i.e., side effects? Are there better alternatives?

A: Hello there, Every drug effects everyone differently, and also every drug is poisonous to the body as it's a foreign substance, however some are a little bit more poisonous than others are. You may take a Tylenol for your headache and it will cure your headache, but at the same time it will do much damage to your liver. Some of the side effects of Aricept are: Nausea -- occurring in up to 11 percent of people Diarrhea -- up to 10 percent Headache -- up to 10 percent Insomnia -- up to 9 percent Generalized pain -- up to 9 percent Dizziness -- up to 8 percent And finally nightmares. Keep in mind that that all of these side effects are rare and the pros definitely outweigh the cons, but be careful while taking any drug. I hope I've helped. :)

Q: what are the side effects from taking aricept if you donot have dementia?
my best friend is taking aricept and getting worse i have known her 30 years and within 4 months she lost 100 lbs. the drs.say she has dementia i donot think she does, it came on too sudden

A: Encourage her to go to a neurologist. Or have her family take her. Or you take her. Someone should go with her. If she is having these problems, she should not be left to her own devices. That is how elderly people wander off and freeze to death.

Q: Aricept interactions with pain or insomnia medication?
My sister told me that when she asked for medicine to help my 74-year-old mother with the severe pain and insomnia she has at night (well, worse at night), the doctor told her that those types of medicines could be potenially fatal when combined with her Aricept medication. I cannot find any information online to support this. Is it true? I don't feel my mother should have to suffer with such severe pain and insomnia at her age. OTC medications do not help her. What can I do?

A: Your doctor may not be very experienced with aricept. He's probably just trying to be careful, unfortunately that means suffering for your mom. Some hypnotics like benadryl (diphenhydramine), doxepin and barbiturates can retard the effectiveness of aricept. Some analgesics like tramadol can make seizures more likely. Some antidepressants like buprprion (Welbutrin) can also make seizures more likely when taken with aricept. Other sedating drugs like aripiprazole (aricept) can retard the effectiveness of aricept. Also many cold medicines could retard aricept's effectiveness. Your mom sounds like a "sundowner". The biggest risk is that your mom would take the wrong dose because of the dementia. Do your mom and yourself a favor and have a consult with a specialist or a regular doctor for a second opinion. Make sure there is an MD after the name and not a DO. There are plenty of good pain medications she could take if she's only dealing with alzheimer's. Likewise for hypnotics. You may loose a little ground in the memory department but she won't be in pain and, no, she won't drop dead from the pain relief.

Q: how do I take aricept with or with out food? also sinemet?
i take aricept 1o mg and sinement 100 mg. I want to know how is best taken with or without food?

A: Aricept is best taken without food, at bedtime. Not sure about sinemet, look it up on the web for dosage. Your medicine bottle should clearly say if it should be taken with food, however, and you can always call your pharmacist for info.

Q: How long does Aricept work for? Do people become immune to its effects?
For Altziemers medication?

A: I took this from a medical site. Never I mean that. It is never advised to take someone off their Alzheimer's meds. Now if the med was for anxiety, depression, or sleep or many many other things other than specifically for Alzheimer's I would say that those drugs could be adjusted or eliminated all to gether. But, with Aricept or other AD drugs, no, never, ever remove them completely. I have seen many times that the person who was on Aricept has been removed. Either from unaware family or uninformed doctors. Always the same result. The patient goes quickly into a downhill spiral. People think that the drug is not working because the patient is still exhibiting problems related to the Alzheimer's, so it is assumed that the drug has ceased to work. Nothing could be farther from the truth. It simply has to be raised, that's all, not discontinued. After the person is removed, they start to get worse pretty fast. Problem is that most of that "damage" that comes back after being removed from the drug can be permanent,,,even if the patient is replaced back on the drug right away. In other words, you may not think that the drug is doing any good, not until the drug is removed, but then you will realise that without the drug the patient would have been much worse, and by that time they are and it's likely to be permanent. It's off here if you're interested. http://www.healthboards.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-14104.html

Q: i found aricept pills in my step daughters pocket. Are kids taking these pills for fun?
What are side effects if a child takes this medicine. She is 16? Having major behavioral problems. Need to know answers.

A: Kids are taking whatever they can get their hands on, in the hope of getting some sort of buzz off it. They are not worried about the consequences of their actions. That's why parents need to be on top of them at all times.
