Q: how does the drug EBIXA work for dementia?
this is a Dementia related question, any links to useful sites will be a great help, but grateful for any help, thanks.

A: Well, this is really a very difficult question to answer for 2 reasons. First, we really don't completely understand the underlying mechanisms of dementia. There are various types, most notably, Alzheimer's Disease, but there are others. The second reason is because Ebixa (memantine) has effects on several neurotransmitter systems which makes it difficult for figure out which one is important in it's role in dementia. Ebixa blocks the NMDA glutamate receptor, but it also interferes with the 5HT-3 receptor as well as with the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. Sorry I can't give you a better answer, but I don't think anyone really knows exactly how it works in dementia. Best bet would probably be via the glutamate system.

Q: other uses of ebixa other than , dementia, migrane & hedache?
indications other than , dementia, migrane & hedache

A: It doesn't appear so. Memantine (ebixa) is a relatively new drug specially developed for use in moderate-to-severe dementia. Namenda (ebixa) is a relative newcomer to the prevention of chronic tension-type headache and Migraine. As is the case with all but four medications currently in use for Migraine prevention, Namenda was noticed to help prevent Migraine when it was prescribed for another condition and is now being prescribed off-label for Migraine prevention.
