Q: can I use Synvisc in my shoulder?
This is a medicine for knees but I was wondering if I could use it in my shoulder

A: Francis, you can use Synvisc in the shoulder but there are a few catches. Synvisc works better in the shoulder than in the knee but it is specifically designated a drug for the knee. So if it is used then you are going to have to get the medication yourself. The doctor when they inject it cannot charge you for the shot as it has not been designated for the shoulder. The great thing about this is that it does work better than in the knee as the shoulder is a non-weight bearing joint. The effects are going to take about 6 weeks before they fully kick in. You can also ask to get in its generic form that will give you 6 vials instead of the 3 that are with Synvisc.

Q: I would like to hear from anyone who has had Synvisc injected into their knees.?
Did you get pain relief and if so, for how long? Have you had it more than once?

A: My dad has had something injected into his knees (maybe Synvisc?). He can move much better than he could just a year ago, but is still stiff after a prolonged sitting period (driving for a couple of hours, for example). He has also been excercising his knees, using an old office chair. He sits in the chair with feet on floor and rocks back and forth, keeping his knees in motion. It has provided considerable relief- the injection as well as the frequent movement. I don't know when he might need another injection, but he's been good for nearly six months now. (His doc had looked at the x-ray of his knees and said they looked like candidates for replacement, but my dad is too young for that- almost 60). If it's something you are considering, I would advise it (provided it is the same stuff). It's nice to see my dad moving a bit more easily and to know that he isn't hurting so much. He takes an aspirin daily as well, but I believe that all three measures together have given him years more movement (provided he continues with this regimen- which I'm sure he will- his wife is a doctor).

Q: Has anyone tried Synvisc?
I have ostoarthitis in knees and 0% cartilage I'm getting synvisc what kind of results can I expect.

A: I had synvic injections about 10 yrs ago. I had significant cartilage damage on the under side of my patella secondary to trama. I had a serious of 3 injections to no benefit to myself. My pain and symptoms remained the same. Not to discourage you though, always worth a try, some folks have seen benefit. Although there is always risk of infection since it does penetrate the joint space.

Q: anyone with experience with synvisc knee injections?
is it any good? How long does it last etc.

A: They last one year on me. For one year I am pain free.

Q: Extremely painful below the knee leg spasms with no warning, getting synvisc for it. wha is this called?
My mom was getting synvisc shots in her knee for muscle spasms that would occur without warning that were excruciatingly painful. They would occur without warning and after being in a motor vehicl accident and chip fracturing her shin it has gotten worse. what is causing this, a pinched nerve? A PA we had seen had given her a brace in case it happens again because he said if it does it could pull the bones apart even tho its involuntary... Any clue how to fix this or how to treat it?

A: She shouldn't be getting synvisc for muscle spasms. Synvisc is to lubricate the joint for osteoarthritis patients. She should be given a muscle relaxant for muscle spasms. Take her to a different doctor.

Q: Has anyone had synvisc for knee pain with little or no help but had a 5 shots of Supartz that did?

A: Information on joint pain , home remedies and treatment is available at http://tinyurl.com/z5vx5

Q: SYNVISC for Osteoarthritis of right knee and Cortizone. NEED HELP URGENT.?
I had SYNVISC (Right Knee) 3 mo. ago to treat OA stabbing pain. Got much better, but since I am traveling and wanted to feel better, I asked my family doctor to give me a CORTISONE shot. 1 hour later I had cortisone injected the stabbing pain which I had not felt for weeks started again, very intense. Can it be inflamation from the shot? My Doctor just left on vacation and I do not know whom to ask and I am in pain. HELP!!

A: Since your doctor has an 'on call' covering for him while he is on vacation, do follow up with his on call. Just call the office and follow the instructions provided for contacting the 'on call'. Could be the injection site causing the pain, but do call........

Q: What has anyone found to be an effective pharmaceutical to treat arthritis?
Here's a list of some I'm aware of, but have not tried... Celebrex Hyalgan Supartz Euflexxa Orthovisc Synvisc

A: Aurothioglucose (Solganal) is a gold compound that reduces inflammation and swelling due to arthritis. methotrexate

Q: Knee problems. Has anyone ever had the Synvisc One shot done? I am out of options here at age 42....?
I've had knee problems since high school. 3 surgeries. I cannot take the pain/anti-inflamatory drugs so now I'm down to cortisone shots. The dr. told me I have very few options left before I'll have to have a total knee replacement at age 42/43. Has anyone had the Synvisc One shot?? if so has it worked for you and would you recommend it to someone like me??? That shot would be my last resort. How long does the shot last and how many times can I have it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

A: I know someone who has, it worked for a year, now its about gone, you can try it, especially at your age, you have nothing to lose,,,if it doesn't work at least you tried

Q: I am getting synvisc injections. If this from a chicken?

A: Don't know where it comes from, but I had them and they are supposed to be good for one to two years and were a blessing for me.

Q: has anyone used synvisc? did it work? can it be used for a torn knee?thank you?

A: I was shocked when I saw this question. I work for the biotech company that developed synvisc and I test this product for a living, so I know quite a bit about it. I have many, many knee problems, but personally have never used it because I am not a good candidate. I have met quite a few people who swear by it though, and of course I am biased, but I believe it to be very helpful. Can you be more specific and tell me what exactly is torn in your knee? Are you referring to cartilage? Check out the website www.synvisc.com. Why don't you e-mail me your specifics and I will try to tell you some more about it and help you. Look forward to hearing from you.

Q: 39 yr old active woman with arthritis. Diet/exercise ideas? Meds,Glucosamine,Synvisc or Hyalgan injections?
I was in my doctor's office and saw pamphlets for Synvisc injections for the knees. My doc said it would probably help me. Have been annoyed about my diet and exercise regimen, too. I'm 5',small frame and I weighed 110 pounds 2 yrs ago, creeping up to like 135 now, but lately I can't find any exercises I can do without suffering a great deal in my joints afterward. My doc said stairs and elliptical machines are out for me (knees too bad) Anybody have any input for me, on any of this, I'll be grateful. Also, if anyone has been thru the mill with the arthritis meds, what do you find works well ? (any thoughts on Glucosamine compounds?)

A: I have benefited from supplementation quite a bit. Ive added glucosamine, msm and omega fatty acids to my regime. I ve gained more stability and significant relief in my knees in as little as 2 weeks. As a veterinary professional I have seen improvements in arthritic pets whose diet is supplemented with glucosamine/msm/omega3's. These compounds are used in conjunction with non steroidal anti inflammatories or opioids. They also lessen the amount of pain medication needed to provide comfort. I find that also to be the case in my own situation. As far as exercise goes try swimming.

Q: has anyone had synvisc injection for a damaged knee? did it work ? thanks....?

A: I took care of a home health patient who had this. It appeared he had diminished pain and could work fairly well. But the cartilege was damaged and that was not repairable. He ultimately got a knee replacement. I think the results of the injection depend on age, how much damage, as wella s how long you have sustained this injury.

Q: Is walking alright if you have orteoarthritis in your knee?
I am currently getting synvisc injection in my knee after damaging it a few years ago,i am 30yrs old.I

A: If you go swimming, avoid "breast stroke". Freestyle front or back crawl puts less stress on knee joint.

Q: my carlitge is really bad shape..pain all the time.they gave me today synvisc?? its sore now..?
how long does it take to start feeling better..i know i get a total of 3 shots 1 aweek........someone thats had this before ( explain)??

A: Don't have an exact answer for how long it will hurt but it does seem to be a normal side effect of the injection. On Synvisc website, it states...As with all viscosupplements, side effects are rare, but may include pain, swelling and/or fluid buildup around the knee. Other side effects, such as rash, have been reported rarely. However, if it persists and gets to troubling I would put a call in to the doctor that gave it to you and ask for suggestions.
