Q: Depo Provera?
I was wondering can any one tell me there depo provera horror stories I have been looking into depo provera class action lawsuits for depo provera side affects I know lots are listed but they say they are rare but i have read so many stories that mirror mine and I don't think they are as rare as they say and I think More woman need to complain about there side affects and ask about class acton lawsuits and see if they can get one started for all depo provera side affects yes I know that by taking presciptions that i am risking the side affect but most women are beeing told that they are rare but I really don't think there as rare as they say thank you so much for as many answers as I can get. I really hope woman stop taking this birth control. It works for some woman but it seems most who use it have most or all the rare side affects listed and ones that are not.have a good day every one does any one agree and think there should be a class action lawsuite for all side affects that are not as rare as they say ?

A: I gained 5 lbs every 3 months. I was on it for a few years, so that really added up. I was also an emotional wreck the entire time. I didn't realize how emotionally off-balance I was until I had stopped. My husband made the comment that I was so much nicer to be around.

Q: depo provera?
What's the difference between Depo Provera and just Provera? I will be taking provera to get my period back to normal ( i havent had one for 4 months). So what's the difference between the two? Has anyone taken provera and have you experienced any side effects?

A: Depo provera (shot form and lasts 3mths) is used for birth control while provera (pill taken daily) is usually used help w/menstration imbalance or postmenopausal problems. Theyre both progesterone hormones just in different intake forms. Sometimes Depo provera is used to for enometriosis problems too. Depo can lighten even stop a womans period (ive been on it for 3yrs and havent had mine for over 2yrs). Depo provera & provera are very old drugs depo was made in 1960's! provera was made back in the 1930's!

Q: Depo-Provera?
I got my first shot about a month and a half ago, because you have to be on your period when you get your frist shot, that was the last time i had my period. I know that the depo-provera will eventually make periods stop but i thought it didnt happen until after the second shot. What could be wrong?

A: that is normal too......

Q: depo-provera?
how soon after you first shot of depo provera is sex safe without using a backup method?

A: WELL THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU TO WAIT 7 DAYS. BUT LET ME SAY THIS, I HAVE BEEN ON THE SHOT FOR 8 YEARS NOW, IM 25. ITS NICE ONLY HAVING A PERIOD ONCE EVERY 3 MONTHS. BUT EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT, MY SIS HAD A PERIOD FOR 5 MONTHS STRAIGHT & GOT OFF IT. I ONLY WEIGH 112 LBS, SO I WISH IT WOULD HAVE MADE ME GAIN SOME WEIGHT, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT DIDNT. HOWEVER, LAST YEAR MY DR. TOLD ME THAT B/C I HAVE BEEN ON IT FOR SO LONG THAT I SHOULD GET A BONE DENSITY SCAN. MY INSURANCE COMPANY AT THE TIME DIDNT COVER IT, SO I DIDNT GET ONE. MY CARRIER I CURRENTLY HAVE DOES, SO 2 DAYS AGO I WENT & GOT IT DONE. THANK GOD I DID B/C IT SHOWED THAT I HAVE OSTEOPENIA IN MY HIPS & SPINE, ALMOST OSTEOPOROSIS. IF YA DONT KNOW, THATS SOMETHING OLD PEOPLE IN LIKE THEIR 60'S-70'S GET, WHICH IS A LOSS OF BONE MASS OR THINNING OF THE BONE. THAT PUTS YOU AT A HIGH RISK FOR FRACTURES. SO I HAVE TO DISCONTINUE THE SHOT ASAP & START TAKING CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS. LUCKILY B/C I AM SO YOUNG ITS REVERSIBLE...I HOPE ANYWAYS, WITH MY LUCK I JUST DONT KNOW. BUT THE DR ALSO SAID IF I WAS TO CONTINUE ON THE PATH IM ON I WOULD BE CRIPPLED WITHIN 10 YEARS. I ALSO NOTICED THAT WHEN I STARTED THE SHOT, THATS WHEN MY MIGRAINES STARTED. SO MY SUGGESTION TO YOU, B/C I CARE, IS TO FIND ANOTHER FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL!

Q: Depo provera?
I have been on the depo provera for almost 10 years thinking I was never going to have children. I am now married and can't think of anything I want more then to share a baby with my husband. I have given up smoking and started eating well and exercising, well we both have, It has only been a few weeks and the hormones are coming back strong but no period yet. Has anyone else been on the injection for so long? what happened to you once you came off it?

A: I agree with Luv2HelpYou. She's right about Depo, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone hoping to get pregnant anytime soon. Some women are able to get their fertility back fairly soon--hopefully you'll be in that camp. However, some women take months--even years--to recover after being on Depo. Depending on your age, I would give it some time. Let your body go through this process and see what happens. If you're in your early 30s or younger... you've got time to do that. If you're 35 or older, I would give it 6 months and then go straight to a fertility specialist if your cycles haven't returned to normal. A fertility specialist may be able to speed up the process with medication. I would strongly suggest you start charting your basal body temperatures now so that you'll have a record of what's going on with your cycles. You'll know exactly when you started ovulating again and if you're ovulating regularly on your own or if it's sporadic. All of this info will be invaluable if you end up in the doctor's office. The more charts you have under your arm, the better. So in addition to the healthier lifestyle, I would add BBT charting. Good luck.

Q: Depo-provera?
I got a depo-provera shot on Friday, and before I got it, the nurse asked if I had any history or breast cancers or the likes. I told her my mother had breast cancer once, and she gave me it anyway (I'm 16, too). Was it wrong of her to give me it? I'm kind of worried now.

A: I have been on Depo for over 5 years, and although i've heard all the so called "horror stories"of taking it, they tend to be told by people who have never been on it. Not once in 5 years have I had any kind of side effect from being on depo. Your nurse has to ask about your family health history, its simply part of your consultation, and theres no way a medical professional would put you on any kind of medication if they thought it may be bad for you in anyway. Its true that women on depo have a slightly higher chance of getting cervical cancer, but the truth is the chance is only a tiny tiny bit higher, not enough to be concerned about, and its not because of the depo, its because your body stops producing estrogen when you're on depo. ( this information came from my doctor, he told me himself its nothing to worry about) So dont worry, and dont listen to those who talk ill of depo provera, its worked wonders for me for over 5 years.

Q: I'm switching from the Pill to Depo-Provera. How long do I have to use a backup method?
I've been on Yaz for about 9 months now and am going to start Depo-Provera tomorrow. I can't figure out how long we have to use condoms before it's effective. '7 days' keeps popping up when I looked online. Is this right? My pharmacist told me 1-2 months?? I understand fully the risks and benefits of Depo-Provera. Please don't tell me your bad stories of being on it. All women react to it differently. - I am aware of the bone density loss warning. I'm only 21 and will be on it for no longer than 2 years and will be taking calcium supplements to prevent that. - Depo Provera is only being considered because it is my last option. The Pill does not work for me and my body reacts horribly to estrogem. Don't recommend other forms of birth control. Depo-Provera is proven and will help with my severe endometriosis. -My husband and I are not planning on having children for a while. I know it can take up to 18 months for my fertility to return and I am fine with that.

A: I used to take depo (i had a hysterectomy) and I LOVED it! I never had a period unless it was close for me to get my next shot. Then I would spot, a little. It only takes 24 hours to be fully effective and lasts about 3 months. Good choice. If I had to be on birth control again, I would pick this. Check out this website too. http://www.fwhc.org/birth-control/bcdepo.htm But just as an FYI, when I went off the shot, I was under the impression that it takes a year to get pregnant if you are trying to concieve. I got pregnant 4 months after my last shot wore off.......

Q: How long does Depo-Provera stay in your system after you discontinue the shots?
I was on depo-provera for 4 years and on March 20 I was due to go back and get another shot, but I decided against it. How long does depo-provera stay in your system after you stop using it?

A: it can stay in your system for up to 18 months after your last shot.

Q: How long after the Depo Provera shot is given, before it become effective?
I got the Depo Provera shot this morning, and am wondering how long it takes before it becomes effective.

A: Go to their website - it should have all of that info there.

Q: How does penicillin affect my Depo Provera contraceptive injection?
I have been using the contraceptive inject (depo provera) for a year and and i have recently developed tonsilitus and my doctor proscribed penicillin. Will this do anything to the affectiveness of my injection as i have been told it does with the pill.

A: Apparently not as depo is directly administered and doesn't require to be absorbed through your gut.. http://studenthealth.oregonstate.edu/answerspot/message.php?message=6769

Q: How long does it take for depo-provera to become effective?
I just had my first baby on the 17th of November and I just got the depo-provera shot today. I haven't had my first pd yet since the baby so my question is when does the shot become effective? I know that if you get the shot within the first 7 days of your pd it becomes effective within 24 hours, but that isn't the case with me. Anyone know the answer to this?

A: I have friends who have used Depo-Provera and they said that it takes about 3 months for the medication to take full effect. However, I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say.

Q: How long does the birth control shot Depo Provera take to start working after the first injection?
I got the first shot on Wednesday and had sex with a condom yesterday, but the condom broke. Is the Depo Provera active or should I be worried?

A: call a pharmacy and ask. It doesn't even have to be your pharmacy. you don't even have to give your name. I call my pharmacy everytime I have a question/ issue. They have never given me bad advice. Listen to what they say. They are professionals, yahoo answers is mainly 13 year olds with no medical knowledge. Most bc takes 30 days to get into your system. So I would ask if you should take plan b while on depo when you call. btw. depo sucks.

Q: How long after getting your Depo Provera shot does it take to kick in ?
My husband and I just had a baby on Oct 19, and I just had my 6 week check up. On this day I received my first shot of Depo Provera in my upper arm. How long does it take to go in effect after it is injected into my system? -Thanks to all who reply and Happy Holidays

A: Pregnancy can occur within 14 days of the injection. Use another method until then :)

Q: How long after Depo Provera to have period?
My last injection was October 2005. My doctor informed me my period was supposed to return on or around January 2006. Here it is August 2, 2006 and no periods. Any suggestions to start my periods again? I was on Depo Provera for 6 months. From May 2005 until October 2005. I need my periods to start to conceive. How long naturally should I wait for it to get out of my system before consulting my doctor? I was planning on waiting until October 2006 since it would be a whole year from the last injection. What do you think?

A: I took my one and only Depo shot back in Feb. Here we are in august and no period. I went to my doctor and told him about it, He persrcibed me Medroxyprogesterone 100 mg tablets. He told me to take those for 10 days and then my period will come back. Then I can choose an alternative birth control, I didnt like the Depo shot. I would see the doctor if I were you.

Q: How long does Depo Provera birth control side effects last?
I got the depo provera shot in the beginning of February, so technically the three months that it's in effect has been over for a few weeks now. However I am still spotting, and have been for at least a month and a half, spotting where it's practically like having my period. Is this normal? I'm a little worried... Also- I'm 18 and this was my first time on birth control.

A: Depo's effects last for 18 months. It takes hold of all of you hormones and goes wild. Don't use any form of b/c that uses hormones. This includes the pill. The pill is what causes much of the breast cancers that we are seeing today, along with the high use of soy. Good luck.
